Volgus set his wings and soared toward the front of the reinforcements. Gaius flew over his rear companies and led them forward to at last assist with Basilas’s holding efforts in the center.

The general leaned to the side to get a glimpse of the battle ahead. Sunlight gleamed off helmets and shields. Swords flashed as they smacked against each other. The rebels swarmed in the center. The loyalists bowed backward.

Gaius needed to reinforce them or all would be lost.

Basilas wouldn’t be happy about his current position. Gaius couldn’t blame his friend for any feelings of ill will. The Chained had advanced far too quickly for even Gaius’s liking, despite his ultimate plans. But the general was still confident.

The rebels were advancing directly along the path Gaius needed them to.

Volgus screeched and tilted down, beginning a landing approach. The gryphon’s head darted from side to side, tracking the various beasts soaring around the battle. Most were engaged in duels, lesser gryphons weaving among each other. But Gaius spotted the larger speck of Avorian chasing away two lesser gryphons on the western flank. He didn’t see Oxus over the fray at all.

Volgus pulled up, using his wings to buffer their speed, before falling to the ground. The landing jolted Gaius, but he dismounted without complaint. There was no space in his mind for minor aches on this day.

The general stepped around Volgus’s wings as the great gryphon ripped back into the sky, already tracking an enemy gryphon to hunt down. His rider hoped to join him later, but there were adjustments needed to the entire battle here. Gaius had to perform his role as general first before he could be a heroic warrior.

Glory would come with victory, not with cutting down a few enemies with his sword.

Basilas stumbled out of the back of the legion’s fighting formation. Gaius immediately felt worse about the position he’d put his friend in. The prima captain’s helmet was askew and missing its plume. His face was plastered with mud. The general stepped forward, mouth opening, but he found the words came hard.

“Sixth and Seventh marching in now.” Gaius pointed back in the direction Volgus had landed from. “Tell us where you need them.”

“Here, in the center. Now.” Basilas’s words came out strained. Normally, the Tulisian’s composure ruled all, even in the thick of battle. This tightness worried Gaius.

Gryphons thundered overhead, one beast twisting to turn belly and claws up to fend off the attack from a pursuer. Gaius would’ve marveled at his first sight of a true gryphon battle in a decade if he hadn’t been distracted by the intricacies of the larger battle.

He waved for an aide and sent off for riders to direct the reinforcements into the center as Basilas had suggested.

“Where is the Third? And the Fourth?” Basilas pulled Gaius’s eyes back forward. “They were supposed to reinforce us.”

Gaius grinned. “I would take you up on Volgus and show you, but I know you prefer the ground.”

Basilas blinked at him in reply.
